Instrument Model Types
Instrument Model Types
Student Models
Cheapest and lowest quality. Rental instruments are student models. Good for beginners but after several years a student model may be limiting to a player's musical development.

Intermediate Models
Mid-grade price and quality. Many people upgrade to an intermediate instrument for high school band. If you are currently renting an instrument, the rental store may offer you a discount on upgrading to an intermediate model.

Professional Models
Highest price and quality. Recommended for advanced students, college students, and lifelong musicians.
Investigate purchasing a used instrument to save money.

Maintenance
Just like a car, without regular maintenance a good instrument will slowly turn into a bad instrument and eventually could stop working entirely. Flutes, clarinets, and saxophones should be professionally "tuned up" by a repair shop every summer. Brass instruments should be cleaned at least once a year.
